Letter from
the Chair
Let
me start by saying thank you to the Board and
membership of the Chamber for the honor of being
selected Chairman of the Board for 2010. I have
a big job ahead of me to try and fill the shoes
of our outgoing Chair, Debbie Hunsaker, who has
done excellent job of directing the Chamber
through a very tough year.
It is truly an honor to
have the opportunity to work with the Board and
staff of the Chamber. The Board members who are
all volunteers and run businesses of their own
devote a great deal of time to accomplish the
goals of the Chamber and do an excellent job of
it. The staff headed by President & CEO, Al
Smith, is also top notch. They are all hard
working folks that are committed to the Mission
of the Chamber which is to promote business and
enhance the economic and cultural well- being of
the people in Fresno County.
As mentioned we have come
through one of the most difficult economic years
on record. With Al Smith’s leadership, the
Boards direction and the contributions of the
staff and volunteers the Chamber has completed
the year with a number of successes. However I
believe we are looking at another very
challenging year ahead.
The economic environment
continues to be uncertain and although there
maybe some signs of improvement small businesses
are struggling. Most small business owners I
talk with indicate that they continue to find it
very difficult to remain profitable. Demand is
off because consumers are feeling uncertain
about the future and are sitting on the side
lines cautiously considering every purchase.
Business owners are
constantly considering how they can do more with
less. Most have cut costs where ever possible,
eliminating everything from advertising to
memberships. Many owners are asking the question
where I invest my limited resources of time and
money to grow my business, remain profitable and
get the best return on my investment (ROI). The
answer is a membership in the Greater Fresno
Chamber of Commerce.
As a Chamber member you
have access to over 1,700 members and fellow
business owners who facing similar challenges.
You have the benefit of working with a
professional staff and volunteers whose purpose
is to promote business and enhance our local
economy. You are invited to a number to a number
of networking opportunities including
breakfasts, luncheons and business after hour’s
gatherings. In addition your membership supports
a very active Government Action Committee which
acts as an advocate for business and ensures job
killer legislation is stopped.
I have been a Chamber
member for a number of years and have found that
being an active Chamber member, SAVES ME MONEY,
MAKES ME MONEY, SAVES ME TIME and MAKES THE
COMMUNITY A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE.
So as you review your
budget for the coming year and you ask yourself
the question where do I invest to grow my
business know that a membership in the Greater
Fresno Chamber of Commerce offers the best ROI
in the central valley.
Sincerely,
Richard (Rick) Whitsell
Chairman of the Board
